What Is Periodontal Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a group of inflammatory conditions that affect the tissues surrounding and supporting your teeth, called the "periodontium." Like tooth decay, gum disease is caused by harmful bacteria in dental plaque and tartar that build up around the teeth and under the gums. Because gum disease often progresses without causing pain, it can go unnoticed. Therefore, it is important to practice good oral hygiene and regularly visit your dentist for checkups, professional cleanings, and routine care. It is also crucial to be aware of the signs and symptoms of gum disease to maintain a healthy smile.

Some indications that you may have periodontal disease include:

  • Inflamed and red gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums and exposed tooth root surfaces
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Teeth that feel loose
  • New spaces developing between the teeth or a change in the bite
  • Change in the fit of existing partial dentures
  • Discharge around the teeth and gums
  • Sharp or dull pain when biting down or chewing food

The Importance Of Good Oral Health

Taking care of your smile is more than just maintaining your teeth and gums. It is also important for your overall health. Recent research has found that periodontal disease, the main cause of tooth loss in adults, is connected to medical conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory problems.

At JP Dental - Jamaica Plain, we understand the importance of preventing, detecting, and treating periodontal disease early on. Our aim is to provide patients with the necessary guidance, support, and treatment to keep their periodontal health in the best possible condition.

What Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis, the initial stage of gum disease, may not cause noticeable discomfort but has specific signs to be aware of. If you experience bleeding, redness, swelling, or tenderness in your gums while brushing, it is likely that you have gingivitis.

The good news is that early treatment of gingivitis can prevent further damage to the gums that occurs in later stages of gum disease. Despite inflammation, the overall health of the gums remains intact at this stage.

Treating gingivitis at this point is often sufficient to reverse the disease and prevent permanent damage to the gums. Deep dental cleanings, improved oral hygiene practices at home, and regular maintenance can help halt the progression of this stage of gum disease.
